The menagerie under lead of Wilhelmina Murray is ordered to retrieve the stolen gravity-repelling substance called cavorite, created by Professor Cavor, and vital for the planned 1900 lunar expedition.

The league tracks the cavorite down a mysterious oriental crime-lord, known only as The Doctor (probably the notorious Fu Manchu), who is to be located in an underground facility underneath Rotherhide Bridge, London. Quatermain and Miss Murray infiltrate the poorhouse located above the bridge, and find an immense airship bristling with weaponry hidden in an abandoned tunnel underneath. While Mr. Hyde creates a diversion, Quatermain recovers the vial of cavorite and makes his escape. They deliver the cavorite to Bond, who will then take the substance to his superior, Mr. M. Unknown to the league at the time, their mysterious superior is not Mycroft Holmes, as assumed, but the presumed dead Dr. James Moriarty.

Moriarty soon commences an aerial bombardment of The Doctor's stronghold of Limehouse from his airship, whilst The Doctor's counter-offensive against the airship is signaled by the attack of dozens of soldiers on glider kites who engage with the crew of Moriarty's airship. Meanwhile, the members of the league sneak aboard, using the Victoria balloon supplied by Nemo. While Nemo and Hyde provide a violent distraction for the airship's crew, Quatermain and Murray move updeck, to find Moriarty in the possession of the cavorite. Quatermain is shot and wounded, but Murray in capable of smashing the sphere encasing the cavorite. Moriarty clutches onto the precious vial and helplessly disappears into the night sky.

The treacherous Griffin is just about to sever the mooring rope of the ballon when the other league members arrive. They cling desperately to the drifting balloon while the airship plunges to the ground and its destruction. Recovered by Nemo's Nautilus, the league are commended by Moriarty's successor, Mycroft Holmes at their base in the British Museum. Meanwhile, ominous green shooting stars appear over the home counties of London...
