Sorry, left the Falcon in the Bentley. Right now, you answer to my Ronson T-T.

All hail Kremperpunk.

Re: Bartitsu, Holmes and a cattle prod

One interesting fact that gets overlooked is how young Holmes and Watson were supposed to be.  The novels and short stories cover the years 1875-1904, with one story set in 1914 when Doyle indicates Holmes is  around 60, which makes him 37 in 1891 when the movie is set.  Downey Jr. is 44 and Law is 37, so are certainly more appropriate in age then many actors cast in the role (Jeremy Brett was 51-61 when he played Holmes).  Law would have been a good Holmes but I guess a US actor had to front the movie to ensure larger global audiences.  British actor Mark Strong (born 1963) who plays Lord Blackwood would have made a good robust Holmes, but does not have sufficient star status to front the movie.

Bartitsu (referred wrongly to as Baritsu in the Holmes stories) was developed in 1898-1902, but according to wikipedia enjoyed a bit of a revival on its centenary in 2002.

Re: Bartitsu, Holmes and a cattle prod

I saw it on Weds when it came out here and I loved it.  I was initially very worried it'd be too Hollywood but it turned out a nice action packed Victorian detective tale.
Bert liked it a lot too smile

I saw it too yesterday and WOW, it was fantastic! Just a tad of steampunk, and exactly the sort of Sherlock Holmes adventure I'd always wanted to see.

Re: Bartitsu, Holmes and a cattle prod

Having the British director, Guy Ritchie, who has a real love for London and for grittiness in his movies, even if it is 'mockney' at times, probably helped it avoid becoming too Hollywood in style.
