Topic: Wuppertal Schwebebahn

The Schwebebahn of Wuppertal, Germany, is the oldest suspended monorail in the world, opened in 1901, it remains in service up to this very day.

Construction on the monorail began in 1898 and was completed two years thereafter. Since 1997, the supporting frame has been largely modernised and a large number of stops have been reconstructed. It still looks best in old photographs though, and “Lord K” posted a lovely collection of them recently at his Journal.

Another Victorian solution to a modern problem - road congestion.  I am making progress on the piece for the Gazette

the trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be

Re: Wuppertal Schwebebahn

The Schwebebahn ist indeed worth the ride but Wuppertal itself suffered greatly from the closing of surrounding coalmines and decline of the steel industry. Not a pretty town at all *sigh*

Re: Wuppertal Schwebebahn

Re: Wuppertal Schwebebahn

I would like monorails if I wasn't so afraid of hights!

Re: Wuppertal Schwebebahn

They're usually only a few metres from the ground... wink

Re: Wuppertal Schwebebahn

Ooh, so awesome! I wish Toronto would convert to this for public transit as opposed to using a subway system.

Re: Wuppertal Schwebebahn

Some Steam-powered monorails... food for thought.
